Eating Popcorn With Your Mouth Open

Eating Popcorn With Your Mouth Open

Next post Previous post

Movie theater. Dark room. A hundred strangers who all paid to be there.

And one guy, four rows back, eating popcorn like a horse eating an apple.

The theater is the aggravating factor

A movie theater is the last room on earth where a group of adults have all agreed to shut up at the same time. That is the entire product. You paid eighteen dollars for a big screen and a room full of people who are not talking.

Then the movie starts and somebody begins working through a large tub with their mouth fully open, and the agreement is dead. Every quiet scene now has a soundtrack.

The characters are whispering something that matters and you are listening to a stranger's molars.

They also cannot find the bottom of the bag

The rummaging.

Not one grab. Twelve. A hand going in and out of a paper bag like it is looking for car keys. Every quiet moment. Every single one.

And there is a specific evil in how the volume tracks the film. Loud scene, the hand rests. Silent dramatic pause, in it goes.

Then there is the bottom of the tub

The last third, where it is mostly unpopped kernels and salt, and instead of accepting that the popcorn portion of the evening has concluded, they go in after it.

Tipping the tub. Shaking it. Looking down into it in a dark room like something is going to be in there.

Nothing is going to be in there. It is kernels. It has been kernels for eleven minutes.

At home does not count

At home do whatever you want. Eat with your hands. Eat over the sink. Nobody cares and nobody is listening.

This is specifically about the shared dark room where a hundred people made a deal.

How to survive it

  • Turn around slowly. Do not say anything. Just turn. Hold it. Turn back. Repeat every four minutes for the length of the film.
  • Offer them yours. Lean back. Extend your bag. "Do you want mine." Sincerely. They will not eat again for the rest of the movie.
  • Eat in perfect sync. Every time they go in, you go in. Same speed. They will notice around minute six and will never be certain.
  • Bring something with a wrapper. A single hard candy in cellophane. Unwrap it across ninety seconds during the quietest scene in the film. You are now the problem, but you have made a point that will outlive both of you.
  • Wait for the credits and say nothing. Stand up. Look at them once. Leave. They will not know what happened and neither will you.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't the point of a theater to eat popcorn?
It is the point of the lobby.

What if it is a loud movie?
Then you are fine and this was never about you.

Isn't this just what going out is?
No.

What about a crying baby?
Different. A baby cannot help it. A grown man can close his mouth.

Should I move seats?
Yes. Immediately. In the first five minutes, before you have committed emotionally.

Isn't this the same post as loud chewing?
Yes.

A note on safety

None of this is advice. Number four makes you the villain of somebody else's night out. We sell merch. We are not qualified to tell you how to conduct yourself in a theater, at a school play, or three rows behind a man who brought his own snacks in a plastic grocery bag. Do what you want. You were going to.
